This is an Antique 1800's 42'' Gas Lamp with a Milk Glass Shade which came out of a restoration estate and it is in good looking and in working condition. It likely dates back to the late 1800's or earlier and it features a magnificent looking milk glass shade which measures 14'' in diameter x 5'' in depth. The gas fixture was designed to be hung from a ceiling and it measures 42'' in length. Early gas lamps which have not been altered to electricity are increasingly hard to find whether you want to use it for display and/or place it back in service. It weighs a total of 12 pounds. In the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1733, some properties of coal-gas are detailed in a paper called, "An Account of the Damp Air in a Coal-pit of Sir James Lowther, sunk within Twenty Yards of the Sea." This paper, contained some striking facts relating to the flammability and other properties of coal gas.The principal properties of coal-gas were demonstrated to different members of the Royal Society, and showed that after keeping the gas sometime, it still retained its flammability. Remarkably, the scientists of the time still saw no useful purpose for it.
