What a solid, chunky lamp. This was the first trusted lamp to use in the mines. Companion of the legendary canary in cage brought down into the mines. The lamp, its characteristic shape designed to ignore flammable gases seeping out of rock and ore. The bird being the first to signal bad news, by fainting and positioning itself legs up. Our lamp is an authentic replica of an early German miner's lamp, heavy bronze construction. Leak-proof kerosene container.M. 26 x 10cm, 10.25 x 4in.
The miners' lamp was invented in Wales as a safe source of light in the mines. (The danger was that an open flame would ignite dangerous gases and cause an explosion.) There are many cheaper versions of the Welsh miners' lamp, but this one is the original Thomas & Williams, each with its own serial number. Made of solid brass with a glass window, it weighs about 3 lb. About 10" tall, not including hanging hook. It burns kerosene, called paraffin in Britain. Comes in a really classy gold-embossed cylindrical box.
